The Sheldon Trust
The Sheldon Trust supports organisations working for the relief of poverty and distress in society, as well as special needs groups, within the West Midlands of England, and particularly Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Wolverhampton and the county of Warwickshire. The average grant size is £3000. In 2009 a total of almost £167,000 was shared by 41 organisations. Capital appeals for buildings are not normally considered, otherwise what you ask for is up to you. Priority is given to grassroots activity run by community groups rather than general appeals from national organisations. A list of grants made in March 2010 is available at www.pwwsolicitors.co.uk/charitable-applications/sheldon-grants/sheldon-grants-march-2010 They ranged from £15,000 to Safeline (over three years) to provide volunteer training, to £1300 to St Martin’s Social Care Project to provide new cooking equipment to continue to provide meals to older people. The trustees meet twice or three times a year, and usually consider 15 to 20 applications at each meeting. Applications must be made at least six weeks prior to the meeting. The application form is at www.pothecary-applications.co.uk/sheldon/init.pl.
Mediabox
Mediabox has announced changes to its Mini Mediabox grant, which aims to give more organisations for youth led media projects. It will now accept applications from schools, colleges and umbrella groups, and has increased its annual turnover threshold to £150,000. The guidance on the website is: “In addition, we are now taking applications from statutory organisations that can demonstrate that a Mini Mediabox project would be a new opportunity for disadvantaged young people involved.” Please visit www.media-box.co.uk/funding for more information.
Kick it out
Football inclusion campaign Kick It Out and sports charity the Football Foundation are offering grants to create more inclusive communities through football. Grants of £2,000 are available to community groups, grassroots and amateur clubs, youth groups and faith organisations. www.kickitout.org/1092.php
The Skinners Company
Lawrence Atwell’s Charity aims to help young people free themselves from poverty and disadvantage by heading into the job they want.Through tailored grant-making to those people who are most in need, the Charity will invest in their talents and aspirations to help them find their way – either straightaway or through a series of steps - into satisfying work. Grants are aimed at young people 16-26 who come from families that receive a total gross income of less than £26,000 per year.
